I recently read an interesting blog article on how to improve your SEO for WordPress sites. It was pretty basic but solid advice (i.e. use an SEO plugin, permalinks, etc.). However, the last item on the list definitely caught my interest. The author advised using pages instead of posts for better SEO.
First off, there was some misinformation about the topic. The author said that pages didn’t allow comments like posts, and so being more static would have more of a chance of appearing in search results. Well, the truth is that you can in fact have comments on your pages. And, although I would agree that pages in WP can serve a different purpose than blog posts, I haven’t seen any evidence that pages provide better SEO than posts.
Even with all of the updates from Google, with all of the posts and pages I’ve created over the years, there hasn’t been any advantage to one or the other when it comes to how they appear in search engine results. I’ve also heard from other experts that there isn’t a difference when it comes to SEO.
So which should you use for your WordPress photo blog? Ultimately, it’s really just a matter of your personal preference and how you want your images displayed. Pages can be used for separate menu items, so if you’d like to divide your photos by portfolio subject or theme this can be a good solution. On the other hand, if your photo blog focuses more on your daily experiences and you want to include stories or other information along with your images, it might make more sense to use blog posts.
It’s really up to you. Both posts and pages have worked equally well for me. You can use any number of great WP plugins to display your images on either one. So for now, I’d advise not to get too hung up on whether to use a post or a page just for SEO purposes.
