One of the most popular features for websites these days is a slider gallery which features photos and/or blog posts that users can scroll through and click to navigate to that page. The good news for WordPress users is that many themes include some type of slider gallery on your home page. But even if the WP theme you use does not offer a slider feature, you can easily install one of the many slider plugins available to add this functionality to your photo blog (or any WordPress site). Here is a quick review of three WordPress slider plugins you can add to your site.
One of my favorite slider plugins is Meta Slider by Matcha Labs. This plugin is very easy to use and lets you choose from four styles of sliders to add to your posts or pages. You can add images from your media library and include captions and links. To add the slider to your blog, you just need to insert the shortcode into your post. See my separate plugin review on Meta Slider for more details.
Cyclone Slider by Nico Amarilla is another great WordPress slider plugin. It also has a very intuitive dashboard interface you use to create your slider. In addition to images, Cyclone Slider also lets you add YouTube and Vimeo videos as well as custom HTML. Like Meta Slider, you also add your slider by simply inserting the generated shortcode to your post or page.
WordPress Vertical Thumbnail Slider
For a totally different look, you might want to try the Vertical Thumbnail Slider by Nikunj Ghandi. This plugin is geared more for those looking to add a more lightbox type of slider. The only downside to the plugin for me is that you can’t add photos directly from your WP media library (at least with the free version anyway). You add images separately from your computer—but you can include a destination URL link. I believe the pro version of the plugin includes more options for adding images.
