One of the most common questions prospective photo bloggers have about creating their own website is: What kind web hosting should I get for my photo blog? Since most web hosts offer WordPress with their hosting plans, you usually don’t have to worry about that. Some of the other considerations you should keep in mind are capacity, speed, support, and value.
Since you’ll be uploading a lot of photos, you definitely want to look for a plan with unlimited disk storage and bandwidth. Most of today’s hosting plans offer unlimited space and data transfer, so there shouldn’t be a problem here. Speed can be harder to judge. Conventional wisdom says that finding a web host with a data center nearer to your area will result in faster site loading times and overall speed. In most cases, I’ve found this to be true. However, I’ve also had a situation where I transferred one of my sites to a web host with a data center much farther away than where it had previously resided, and the load time was much better. So, you also need to consider the types of servers and network infrastructure.
Customer support is another vital ingredient for a good web host. In addition to some online research, I also recommend you contact the support department of the hosting company you’re considering and test them out. How long do you have to wait before you’re connected to a support rep? Are they able to provide the information you need? Are they courteous and helpful? Chances are, if they don’t handle your inquiries properly before you purchase your hosting, they’re probably not going to be very good afterwards either.
You also want to look for the best value you can get with your hosting plan. Ideally, you want to get the features you need to expand your online presence in the future (like being able to add multiple domains and websites if needed) at the best price possible. For me, two of the best web hosting companies for WordPress photo bloggers are Web Hosting Hub and iPage. I use both of these hosts (Web Hosting Hub for this site) and have been highly satisfied. Both Hub and iPage provide all the features that photo bloggers will need to create and get their websites online. Web Hosting Hub is probably better suited for slightly more technical users, while iPage is better for newbies. However, I consider both excellent choices for a WP blog.
