Minimatica by One Designs is one of the photo blogging themes in the WP 3.5 repository that I really like. Currently, there are a couple of issues with it, but overall the theme has a very clean, simple but classy look to it.
There is a problem with the theme interacting with the new WP 3.5 media interface. Specifically, when you try to add a Featured Image from a post, the media library does not appear. However, there is a fix for this that I got from One Designs website. You need to modify two lines of code in the functions.php file.
Also, the images slider on your home page is cool, but getting your images to look just right can be tedious. Horizontal photos work much better in the gallery but the width needs to be at least 600px or you’ll get blank space on the sides. Then, if your image is larger, you may not get the part of the photo you’d like to appear in the slider. It may take some trial and error.
Those issues aside, I still really like the look of this theme. And I think it will suit a lot of photographers that want to show off their work.
Your homepage in Minimatica includes an image slider gallery of your posts’ featured images. Categories appear at the bottom of homepage. When you select a category, those featured images from the posts appear in the slider.
Mouse over an image and it slides out to reveal the entire photo with the title and category of your post.
You also have the option to have your homepage display your posts separately instead of in the slider format.
Posts appear with your featured image. Interestingly, if you click on the featured image, it appears in the pop out style with a close box. However, if you click on a non-featured image (i.e. any other photo in your post), it just appears on a plain screen with no navigation options at all. So, if you want multiple images on a page or post, you’d probably want to install a plugin for a more user-friendly navigation interface.
On the backend, Minimatica includes options for page views, custom headers, and backgrounds.
While Minimatica may not be the perfect theme for all photo bloggers, it does have a classy, simplistic look that many will appreciate.
